Advanced Content

Extended Learning Program or ELP offers students who qualify for gifted services the opportunity to immerse themselves into a totally project based learning environment with an increased educational tempo to challenge and engage student learning. Students in the program will find a variety of challenging and stimulating project options based on their grade and the content.

6th & 7th Grade

ELP offers a longitudinal look at a variety of historical topics, writing and speaking opportunities.

8th Grade Honors ELA

This offers some non ELP students to work with their peers who have been identified as gifted which creates a challenging blend of like minded students who share similar ideas and ideals on a variety of ELA topics. Novel reading, synthesis of complex text and participation in Socratic Seminars is required. This class also offers 8th graders an opportunity for a challenging capstone project culminating at the end of quarter 4. Participation in 8th grade Honors ELA requires a commitment letter to be signed by both student and parent and a commitment to participate in the Exit Project.

Advanced Math

Grade 6 Advanced Math Classes

Students are placed into their math classes based on teacher recommendation and their grades and test scores for the previous two years. There are two levels of advanced math offered in 6th grade.

Level 1 -7th Grade Math

Instructional time focuses on four critical areas:

  1. Developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships

  2. Developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations

  3. Solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume

  4. Drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

Advanced Math

Grade 7 Advanced Math Classes

Students are placed into their math classes based on teacher recommendation and their grades and test scores for the previous two years. There are two levels of advanced math offered in 7th grade.

7th Grade

Accelerated Math

Level 1- 8th Grade Math (Pre-Algebra)

Instructional time focus on three critical areas:

  1. Formulate and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations

  2. Grasp the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships

  3. Analyze two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem. This class is only intended for students who displayed absolute mastery of the previous year’s advanced math class.

Level 2- 7/8 Combo (Pre-Algebra)

Instruction covers the 7th grade standards above and these three critical areas of 8th grade:

  1. Formulate and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations;

Requirements to move to next level are a student must earn a B or higher, score 80% or higher as average test score and have their teacher’s recommendation.

Level 2 - High School Algebra 1

Students use the language of Algebra, its terms, symbols and logic to solve problems and describe relationships. Students will use algebraic, numerical, and graphical representations to solve realistic problems and to acquire the mathematical skills necessary for Geometry and Algebra 2.

Requirement to enroll in Algebra: a B or higher in pre-algebra, score 80% or higher as average test score and have their pre-algebra teacher’s recommendation.

*Credit: 1 High School Credit earned if student earns a B or higher and scores 80% or higher as average test score.

Grade 8 High School Math Classes

Students are placed into their math classes based on teacher recommendation and their grades and test scores for the previous two years. There are two levels of advanced math offered in 8th grade.

Level 1- High School Algebra 1

In this course, students use the language of Algebra, its terms, symbols and logic to solve problems and describe relationships. Students will use algebraic, numerical, and graphical representations to solve realistic problems and to acquire the mathematical skills necessary for Geometry and Algebra 2.

Level 2 - High School Honors Geometry

In this course, students will learn how to use mathematic tools to investigate geometric principles and relationships. Topics covered are reasoning, proof, perpendicular and parallel lines, properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, transformations, circles, area of polygons and circles, surface area and volumes.

Proofs will be used throughout the year to emphasize logical reasoning and build understanding of geometric postulates. Students should be motivated and capable of pursuing projects independently.

Requirement to enroll in Geometry: a B or higher in Algebra 1, score 80% or higher as average test score and have their Algebra teacher’s recommendation.
